An abscess is an acute collection of pus around the anus, while a fistula is a chronic abnormal tract connecting the inside of the anus to the skin. They present with persistent, throbbing pain, swelling, redness, fever and discharge of pus or watery fluid.
How we approach it
Treatment includes clinical diagnosis and surgical management — draining an abscess or treating a fistula, often with laser technique (FiLaC), which fully protects the anal sphincters.
