Non-cardiac Chest Pain

Chest pain that mimics cardiac angina, but originates from an oesophageal condition.

Common symptoms

  • Pain or tightness in the centre of the chest
  • Investigated only after cardiac conditions have been excluded

Non-cardiac chest pain mimics cardiac angina, but originates from a condition of the oesophagus, such as a motility disorder or severe gastro-oesophageal reflux. By definition, it is only investigated once cardiac causes have first been excluded.

How we approach it

Functional oesophageal tests are carried out (manometry, 24-hour pH-impedance monitoring) to identify acid reflux or muscle spasm as the cause of the pain.
