High-resolution oesophageal manometry is the leading diagnostic test for assessing the function and motility of the oesophageal muscles. We use advanced pressure-recording systems, offering complete accuracy in diagnosing conditions that affect the smooth passage of food.
When oesophageal manometry is recommended
- Dysphagia: Difficulty, a sensation of a “lump”, or pain when swallowing solids or liquids.
- Non-cardiac chest pain: Investigating chest pain once a cardiac cause has first been excluded.
- Persistent reflux or regurgitation: When symptoms are not simply explained by classic GERD.
- Pre-operative assessment: A necessary step before surgery for gastro-oesophageal reflux or a hiatal hernia.
- Diagnosing specific disorders: Such as achalasia or diffuse oesophageal spasm.
How the procedure is carried out
- Inserting the catheter: An extremely thin, soft catheter is passed painlessly through the nose and guided into the oesophagus and stomach.
- Recording swallows: The patient takes small, controlled sips of water, while the catheter records the pressures and muscle contractions in detail.
- Duration & immediate return: The procedure takes only 20 to 30 minutes, and once it is finished you can return straight away to your usual activities.
