Gastroscopy

Accurate diagnosis and direct investigation of conditions of the upper digestive system.

Gastroscopy (upper GI endoscopy) is a cornerstone of modern gastroenterology for the safe, detailed examination of the oesophagus, stomach and duodenum. We use the most advanced, high-resolution endoscopic systems, ensuring maximum diagnostic accuracy with complete safety and respect for your comfort.

  • Persistent heartburn or reflux (symptoms of gastro-oesophageal reflux).
  • Indigestion, bloating, pain or a burning sensation in the upper abdomen.
  • Difficulty swallowing or a sensation of a lump in the throat.
  • Unexplained nausea, vomiting or weight loss.
  • Investigation of anaemia or the presence of blood.
  • Checking and monitoring known conditions, such as an ulcer, gastritis or Barrett’s oesophagus.

What the procedure & biopsies involve

  • Advanced imaging technology: The examination is performed with a thin, flexible endoscope fitted with a high-resolution camera, allowing even the smallest changes in the lining to be identified.
  • A comfortable experience with light sedation: Light sedation is given by experienced medical staff, so the examination is completely painless and comfortable.
  • Biopsies & H. pylori testing: The doctor can painlessly take tiny tissue samples for histological examination, and test directly for Helicobacter pylori (H. pylori).
  • Duration: The endoscopic procedure itself takes only a few minutes (usually 5-10 minutes).

Preparation & patient instructions

You will need to fast from food and fluids for a number of hours beforehand, so the stomach is completely empty, and you will need to be accompanied home due to the sedation. You will receive detailed, personalised preparation instructions — see the Patient Info page.
