Laparoscopic cholecystectomy is the modern, minimally invasive surgical method for removing the gallbladder. It is the most widely used and safest way of treating gallstones and their complications.
Unlike open surgery, the procedure is carried out through 3-4 very small incisions (5-10mm) in the skin, through which a special high-resolution camera (laparoscope) and fine surgical instruments are introduced.
When surgery is required
Removal of the gallbladder is mainly recommended in the following cases:
- Gallstones: When they cause symptoms such as pain, nausea or indigestion.
- Acute or chronic cholecystitis: Inflammation of the gallbladder.
- Gallbladder polyps: Particularly when they increase in size.
- Bile duct stones or pancreatitis: Complications caused by stones moving into the bile ducts.

The steps of the procedure
- Preparation & access: The necessary space is created in the abdominal cavity using CO₂, and the trocars (small tubes) are introduced.
- Identifying structures: The cystic duct and cystic artery are precisely identified (Calot’s triangle).
- Clipping & division: Specialised vascular clips are placed to safely secure and divide the vessels.
- Removal: The gallbladder is freed from the liver, placed in a special protective bag (endobag) and removed safely.
After surgery — recovery
- Hospital stay: 12 to 24 hours.
- Return to work: In 3 to 7 days, depending on the nature of your work.
- Diet: A light, low-fat diet is recommended for the first few days, with a gradual return to a full, normal diet.
