Gallstones form inside the gallbladder and can cause blockage and acute inflammation (cholecystitis). The pain is usually felt in the right upper abdomen, often radiating to the back or right shoulder, particularly after fatty meals, and is often accompanied by nausea or a feeling of wanting to vomit.
How we approach it
Diagnosis is made with an ultrasound scan and blood tests. When stones cause recurring symptoms or inflammation, the established treatment is to schedule a laparoscopic cholecystectomy.
