Sigmoidoscopy is a specialised endoscopic examination that focuses on the direct inspection of the final section of the large bowel — the rectum and the sigmoid colon. We use advanced, high-resolution endoscopic systems for a safe, comfortable and reliable diagnostic approach when the clinical problem is localised to this area.
When sigmoidoscopy is recommended
- Rectal bleeding: Often linked to local conditions (such as haemorrhoids, fissures or rectal polyps).
- A sudden or persistent change in bowel habit: Diarrhoea or constipation that is functionally limited to the lower large bowel.
- Localised abdominal pain or discomfort: In the lower left abdomen.
- Screening & follow-up: Targeted preventive screening or regular monitoring after previous treatment or polyp removal.
Advantages & the procedure
- Simpler preparation: Compared with a full colonoscopy, it requires significantly lighter and quicker preparation (usually a local enema a few hours beforehand).
- Short duration: The procedure itself is completed in 5 to 10 minutes.
- Biopsies where needed: If suspicious changes, inflammation or polyps are found, the doctor can proceed immediately and painlessly to take samples for histological analysis.
