Helicobacter pylori is a chronic bacterial infection that colonises the stomach and is a leading cause of gastritis, ulcers and stomach cancer. It is often symptomless, but can present with indigestion, bloating, heartburn or stomach pain.
How we approach it
Diagnosis is made through a biopsy during gastroscopy, a breath test, or a stool test. This is followed by a strict course of antibiotic eradication treatment, with a re-test afterwards to confirm the bacterium has been fully cleared.
