A hiatal hernia is a structural condition in which part of the stomach shifts upward, through the diaphragm, into the chest cavity. It often causes a sensation of bloating, early fullness, heartburn and a tendency to reflux food, particularly after large meals or when lying down.

How we approach it

Diagnosis is made through endoscopy or imaging. Treatment includes dietary guidance, medication and, where judged necessary, assessment for further investigation before any surgical decision.
