Irritable bowel syndrome (IBS) is a functional bowel disorder in which there is no organic damage or inflammation, but the motility and nerve sensitivity of the bowel are disturbed. It presents with abdominal pain or discomfort related to bowel movements, marked bloating, and alternating periods of diarrhoea and constipation.
How we approach it
Diagnosis requires excluding other organic conditions (with endoscopy where needed). Treatment is personalised and may include dietary changes (e.g. a low-FODMAP diet), managing stress and lifestyle, and symptomatic medication when required.
