When colonoscopy is recommended
- Screening: Recommended for everyone over the age of 45-50, or earlier if there is a family history of polyps or colorectal cancer.
- Rectal bleeding: Blood in the stool, or a positive faecal occult blood test.
- Unexplained change in bowel habit: New-onset persistent diarrhoea, constipation, or alternating between the two.
- Persistent abdominal pain: Cramping, bloating or abdominal discomfort of unknown cause.
- Investigation of anaemia, especially iron-deficiency anaemia.
- Follow-up: For patients with a history of polyps, inflammatory bowel disease, or previous bowel surgery.
What the procedure & treatment involve
- Advanced imaging technology: Thin, flexible, latest-generation endoscopes with digital chromoendoscopy, allowing even the smallest flat polyps to be detected.
- A completely painless experience with light sedation: The patient sleeps peacefully and feels nothing during the procedure.
- Polypectomy & biopsies in the same session: If polyps or suspicious areas are found, the doctor can proceed immediately and painlessly to remove them or take biopsies.
- Duration: The procedure itself usually takes 15 to 30 minutes.
Preparation: the key to a successful examination
A specific dietary preparation is required a few days beforehand, along with a bowel-cleansing solution the day before or on the day of the examination, and you will need to be accompanied home due to the sedation. - GESY beneficiaries: Colonoscopy, screening and polypectomy are provided as usual to beneficiaries of the General Healthcare System.
- Private care: The examination is also offered privately for non-GESY beneficiaries, overseas residents, or patients who want immediate access and flexible scheduling.
