Capsule Endoscopy

The revolutionary, painless technology that lights up every corner of the small bowel.

The small bowel is the longest section of the digestive system (around 5-6 metres long) and, because of where it sits, remained a “blind spot” for traditional endoscopes for decades. We use advanced capsule endoscopy technology to offer a leading, completely non-invasive diagnostic solution for conditions that used to go undiagnosed.

How it works

The patient swallows a microscopic, wireless camera the size of a pill, with a little water. As the capsule travels naturally through the entire digestive system, it records and wirelessly transmits thousands of high-resolution images from inside the small bowel to a small recording device worn on a belt. The capsule then passes naturally out of the body.

  • Unexplained digestive bleeding: Locating a source of bleeding that was not identified by gastroscopy or colonoscopy.
  • Investigation of anaemia: Persistent iron-deficiency anaemia of unknown cause.
  • Diagnosis & monitoring of Crohn’s disease: Detecting inflammation, ulcers or strictures in the small bowel.
  • Investigation of tumours or polyps: Checking for rare lesions or growths in the small bowel.

Advantages & the procedure

  • Completely painless & no sedation: No sedation or insertion of a flexible tube is needed — you simply swallow the capsule.
  • Free to move around: During recording (usually 8-10 hours), you can carry on with your normal light daily activities, with no hospital stay.
  • Complete visual coverage: Gives access to areas of the bowel that cannot be reached with conventional endoscopes.

You will receive clear, personalised written dietary and bowel-cleansing instructions from our medical team before the examination — see the Patient Info page.
