Colorectal cancer is a malignant tumour that develops in the large bowel or rectum, usually arising from a pre-existing polyp. It presents with a change in bowel habits (persistent diarrhoea or constipation), blood in the stool, unexplained anaemia, weight loss and abdominal pain.
How we approach it
Screening with colonoscopy prevents the disease by removing polyps before they can progress. If symptoms are suspicious, we proceed straight to a diagnostic colonoscopy and biopsy to confirm the diagnosis.
